QUESTION TO NIGHT

By Luis G. Dato

I lift my soul into the infinite,
And seek to wrest its mystery from night,
The why of stars and days, the why we moan
For elixirs we find from lips alone.

For elixirs we find from lips a lone,
A momentary flame we soon find gone,
Night answers not beyond the window bars
Other than show inscrutable its stars.

Ghost of the days that cross in time and space,
To leave only the memory of a face,
I lift my soul your mystery to find,
And soon I see but leaves blown in the wind.
