TO A YOUNG POETESS

By Luis G. Dato

Like eagles striving for the mighty sweep
Of sky blue-vaulted o’er the mirroring wave,
In awesome first rehearsals your dreams leap
Beyond the perilous peaks with young wings brave.

Flutter your wines upon the desolate cliff,
Meet love in time, defy the precipice,
God’s sweet young things cannot soon come to grief,
Whom He made beautiful for the first kiss.

The world’s a terror-haunted fugitive,
From gods we dread but cannot break, we cower
If only, like you, we knew half your power!
Teach us the dim abysses to subdue.

With wisdom of your wings in flawless flight,
Open the wider vision, brighter view,
Dawn’s aureate yearning to emerge from night.
