DISTANT OR NEAR

By Luis G. Dato

Distant or near,
Hour of night or day,
To me what matter
Or window grill or grated door or lapse of years

To shut you in another, different world?
defy time and distance,
All for a memory of moonlight
And your dream-song throbbing

Under a host of stars
Your hands straying over flowers swooning in the starshine,
Your hair in the moonlight fragrant with roses.
Your doors, windows, powerless are they to contain the starlight

That shines in your eyes, glows like a lamp for my feet,
Powerless, for you keep only her form, her shadow,
But her soul I keep and the fragrance of her roses,
In the moonlight, in the moonlight, under the stars.
