FORGIVE ME, LORD!

by Luis G. Dato

Upon the alleys of the life I led,
No Cross weighed body down,
No Pilate brought upon my head
A briar crown.

The terror of some unlit Golgotha
Loomed not for my alarm,
Inhostile crowds my sorrow saw,
Nor wished me harm.

From out the shadow of men’s sacrilege,
No lashes drew a groan,
Against my sides no lance’s edge
Prodded me on.

Forgive me, Lord, that in my night,
I should be cruel, vain,
For I was Life, but you were Light
And knew no pain.
