TO A LADY HID BEHIND COSMOS FLOWERS

by Luis G. Dato

Lady by yonder window grilled and barred,
Your face by cosmos flowers fully hidden,
The more my morning’s heaven because forbidden
More sought since worlds for such as you have warred;
Your mystery the clustering flowers guard,
And I to wild conjecturing am bidden,
With many ghosts and wraiths my heart is chidden,
That stand betwixt my dreams and their reward.

I wish for wings to pass the insolent grills,
And power to subdue your fragrant bars,
To snatch you to the valleys and the hills
That wait beneath the fair familiar stars,
Below your window by the flowing stream,
A hostage I desire you for my dream,
