O from the world what have you, dear, to fear
Because for love you gave to me your heart?
What have you done set from the rest apart,
Is your compassion cause for shame, the mare
Response to your heart’s call a flaunting sheer
Of mores, the world’s usage to depart.
And trespass, of the mortal sins a part,
On which conventions frown with eye severe?

Since when, since Adam floundered in the Fall
Is it disgrace, a sin the heart to heed,
Love reprehensible and evil all?
And for its happiness must the heart bleed?
Is the world God, His pardon to recall?
What of His love and mercy then the meed?
