XLI

by Luis G. Dato

Why should the world deprive me of the right
To hear your voice, your dear face to behold,
Within my arms your fair form to enfold,
Who are the light, the cause of my delight?
What law of Nature or of God to cite.
What prohibition to our passion told,
Held in high honor as the ages rolled,
Controlling boundless love’s upsurge of might?

If there be such, why then who made your fair,
Is Beauty then deceit to seeing eyes,
Did God create such beauty everywhere
The heart of mortals only to entice?
Was Eve created as God’s cruel snare,
Who placed elsewhere terrestrial Paradise?
