Life

by Luis G. Dato

Alas that life should be a dream
Compared to the unending sun!
Rose throbbing o’er the flowing stream
Today, tomorrow senseless ground!

Alas that we cannot but stay
Only as comes the ocean wind,
A sigh we hear above the Way
And wound no love of earth can bind.

Yet take us of our day its hour,
With soul annul its brevity.
Live briefly as the fading flower
And bear its deathless memory.
