I wait to see you pass by in the dawn,
Day’s all too drear, till when the sun sinks low,
I thrill with hope as o’er the green, cool lawn
You came to light my heart with light aglow
The ground you tread and the quiet grass,
Ah, do they feel the callousness of shoes,
Weighing above them heedless as you pass,
Regal and beautiful, a poet’s Muse?
Oh, lucky flowers and grass, most enviable road!
‘Tis given you unasked, each dawn and eve.
Dear sight, sweet burden, which to have I fain
My own soul could condemn. A precious load
For which day long deprived, bitterly I grieve,
For love loves not, I see not love again!
