If I should die, no sigh of yours shall call
Back to the living and the world the dead,
And not your tears in tardy pity shed
Shall make arise the dead that you let fall.
For life is love, but death is a blind wall,
Our bodies rot on which vile worms have fed,
And none return from realms unvisited
Once Styx is crossed, and entered Charon’s hall.

Perhaps I’m wrong, perhaps eternity
Awaits us all beyond the further shore,
There might be truth in faith, hope, charity,
That those who suffer most, God most adore —
But this is sure: love’s life’s felicity,
This being so I love you all the more!
