CXVII

by Luis G. Dato

I stood at Gizeh, where a Pharoah once
The dull horizon of Sahara scanned,
The while obedient, as to God’s command,
And come from all that compassless expanse,
From Tigris even and the rilled Sudans,
By memories centurial caravaned,
The multitude, upon the sterile sand,
Upreared stone chronicles of his romance.

I stood upon the desert, rapt the while,
In wonder, by what duned dominion hid
The rubied hand for whom the giant pile
Sprung, as by dream, beside the river’s lid;
I wondered, with the Sphinx upon the Nile,
And questioned of the tongueless pyramid.
