O closed dark windows of the home so dear,
So far away though just across the street,
Your room dim-lighted, callous to the beat,
The tempest of the heart that cannot hear
Your song, nor see your face beloved appear
To make for just a moment life more sweet,
To make love leap with jubilant, swift feet
From the dark shadows that abide with fear.
O let me see in windows just one ray
Of light to shed away the nagging gloom,
Just one brief snatch of song at close of day,
To ease the weariness that fills my room,
And from your pillow kindly thoughts let stray
To make more bearable my hapless doom.
