What do you fear, O love, that you deny
Your heart’s dear Paradise to this your slave,
Why can’t you give that which ‘twere sin to have
Ungiven, and for which all nights I sigh?
Why can’t compassion be your meet reply,
When God His pardon to us mortals gave,
When moonlight’s rays the shimmering ocean lave,
O why remain deaf to my anguished cry?

O waver not my sorrows to efface,
Surrender, dear, without you life is gall,
O let me see the lovelight in your face,
Before Time unrelenting holds us thrall,
O let me hold you in my arms embrace,
And let you drain the nectar of my soul!
