LXVII

by Luis G. Dato

Ah, make more bearable my hapless plight,
Give me one smile, of love one furtive glance,
And in jam sessions just one transient dance
To make less dark the all-pervading night,
Into which I am plunged with not a light,
Without one word from you hope to enhance,
Or some slight token to let fall perchance
For one so long deprived of your dear sight.

Why have I met you, now I ask my fate,
Since meeting you has brought eternal woe?
Why was I born at all but to await
Your love in vain but only nameless throe?
Ah, better not to be than have your hate,
Ah, death is sweeter than life without you!
