OBSTACLE TO GRACE

by Luis G. Dato

The wage of sin is death, the death of man,
But death formed not a part of God’s first plan,
“Twas Adam only brought woe to our earth,
By sins which henceforth coupled death with birth.

As not result of Adam’s less of grace
With every woman born a snare we face,
And man his God-forbidden pleasure take,
Along with grace the venom of the snake.

Why was love sin? what crime was it of Eve
For which the human progeny must grieve?
A slave of sense, in reason’s disregard —
This was the blew that Adam could not ward.

No accident it was, but calm, deliberate,
His disobedience which changed human fate,
Henceforth, our sin would stand, lone obstacle
To man’s sanctification since his fall.

‘Tis said that God is out of date, behind,
No bigger coward we shall ever find,
For truth, His truth eternally shall stand,
The last to rule shall to God’s first command.

But be dismayed not, God, compassionate,
A tear, a prayer suffices to placate
The devil tempts, God knows this all to well,
He treats us like no hardened infidel.

Always too willing to forgive, God weighs
Our acts with mercy and His bright sword stays,
To penitents His warmest gift have been,
Page St. Augustine, Mary Magdalene!

But think you not that sinning matters not,
We answer for our actions, caught, uncaught,
from fruits of folly there is no release
For God unseen who every motive sees.

Like some deep purple in the distant sky
To promise hope His mercy does not die,
O God, as night from less of grace sets in,
Rescue our soul from the morass of sin.

Therefore, my brethren, see that evermore
We walk in His commandments, o’er implore
God’s guardian angel in life’s long dark night,
Jerusalem to reach, His everlasting light.
