SONNET (Postlude to Recto Eulogy on Pres. Roxas)

By Luis G. Dato

The dead speak of the dead unto the living,
And by the living little understood
The trees they see too much to see the wood,
And soul is lost in all the world’s mad striving.
Of great minds God’s not generous in giving,
The breed dies out with lesser breeds renewed,
God calls too soon from earth the great and good,
To plunge those whom they leave in pointless grieving.

Roxas was great and Recto yet was greater,
Their lives to immolate for country’s sake,
Than both we shall not find more vehement hater
Of sham, or bolder heights of vision take,
As on a rock, they carved a nation’s fate,
Because of them our country once was great.
