XCVIX

by Luis G. Dato

Have I been wrong, was I not overwise
When of my heart to you I gave the key,
Was it all folly on the part of me,
Succumbing senseless to lone’s witcheries?
Is it that in the cosmic artifice
Love is predestined foe, the enemy
To ward away, that ‘tis his perfidy
Caused man his mooted loss of Paradise?

Mind asks, but ‘tis the heart that seeks to find
The answer to the questions, yes and no,
And if no answer, still the heart will bind
The wide world’s hurt, both Adam’s and Cain’s throe.
Have I been wrong? No answer from the mind,
And the heart flounders, speechless, with its woe!
