XLIII

by Luis G. Dato

Why can’t you give my life significance
Who are the flower, the light of all my seeing,
The soul, the spirit, core of all my being,
With whom alone the heart can know romance?
O know you not our life’s a throw of chance,
And we are creatures moving to blind fate?
Will you leave me apart, disconsolate,
Your heedless heart in crusts of circumstance?

And know you not youth flies and life is brief,
Today once set dies with the days of yore.
And our joys fade and present e’er is grief,
A fate we mortals all in vain deplore?
While roses bloom, ere comes the yellow leaf,
Love me, my sweet, till the world be no more!
