LXXXIV

by Luis G. Dato

And now I meet you coming from the church —
What sudden change, what difference in mien
From the last time that you my eyes had seen!
How cruelly you leave me in the lurch,
How to the depths, from O what dizzy perch
Of happiness and hope my heart has been,
What veil of happenings has intervened between?
Is this the sign-off, end of the vain search?

And now I see of love, all labour lost,
There is not hope for me your heart to gain,
How in your eyes I see naught but a ghost
Of dead desire and love all dreamed in vain,
All that I cherish, all I treasure most
Now shall take wings, returning not again.
