The Sea

by Luis G. Dato

Bright wisps of sea careering as I dream
And sit beside my sorrow in the shore,
In wakeful slumber must you bide no more
But rise beneath my feet and in a stream
Of silver in the fading twilight seem
To pour forth in the ear the murm’rous lore
Of the dim immemorial ocean floor
Where light is pale and eyes like strange stars gleam.
Sound O more loudly, Sea, and let me share.

Spirit unknown, the victory of the brine.
Attuned to your deep harmony my care
Is lost in your immenseness in the wind.
Myself of all my woe bereft I find
When with the night I hear your billows join.
