And now your door is shut, your windows all,
So like your heart, closed to all pity, dear!
And I am haunted by gray memories sear
That in the night confront me and appall
To spread a gloom on my soul, like a pall,
And make all vivid and the meaning clear
Of what we mean by far, O far though near,
When a dark chasm separates the soul.

I shall not bring a knock this midnight hour,
Although how much I need you God can tell,
But light a light on paper to outpour
The thoughts of this, your pilgrim, infidel,
For love’s like music, like a blossoming flower,
It will ring in your heart a mighty hell.
