Now hurriedly I must leave you today
To take post-graduate at the UNC,
How great a sacrifice it is to me,
The pain how deep to wrench myself away
From your dear side whom I have not always,
And times there be when you I do not see
To my grief, torment, moral misery,
How great, it is beyond all words to say.

Yet so it is, and now in haste I leave,
But I’ll be back as early as I can,
For far from you my life is very lone,
The world’s that way — we love and then we grieve,
True love runs rough, it is the fate of man,
And till we meet, what woe to be alone!
