CVIII

by Luis G. Dato

Ah, no return, mark this, nor e’er forget
Our days are numbered, and each passing year
Our paths on earth which we have found do dear
Are that much shortened as the bright suns set;
And see us rot that now behold us yet,
And all the flowers that our glad eyes endear
One day not known shall sullen deck our bier,
And loving eyes with unstaunched tears be wet.

Then let me hold you in my arms, my love,
While yet we live, forever we’ll not stay,
Like stone, or the eternal stars above,
Our love’s dear pleasures all so fugitive
Give then to me, your heart to me then give
Before dark night engulfs our measured way.
