CXIII

by Luis G. Dato

Waiting for two to make a foursome game
Beside the empty table by the wall,
We look up when we see some neighbors call
And from somewhere hear mention of your name,
How opportune that at such time you came,
Though not intending to be part at all
Of any game for high stakes or for small —
Proficiency at cards you do not claim.

Of king and queen, two, three and ace we may
Be all engrossed throughout the day and far
Into the reaches of the swift-houred night,
Perhaps today you’ll be our lucky star,
And make us fret not at the game’s delay
For you are rather pleasing to the sight.
