LXXVII

by Luis G. Dato

If only when your lights go out, I were
With you a moment ‘neath one roof, dear one,
With you so near to hold my very own,
Our breast to God of all pretenses bare!
Then would descend sweet peace, the end of care,
Because with you the night could all atone
For all the grief, the woe when all alone
I pined and almost perished in despair!

But it cannot be yet, the skies do not
Look with compassion on my prayers all,
I muse alone in all your thoughts forgot
In this dark corner as the sad tears fall,
This is my destiny, predestined lot,
The shadows lengthen as I drink my gall.
