XCIV

by Luis G. Dato

How bright yon star gleams o’er the coco palms,
All other stars of evening to outshine,
Illumining this sorrowful life of mine,
Where love receives not for its pains and alms.
Fair evening in the starlight now becalms,
As profusely the stars to shed now deign
On vales celestial light, soft and benign,
While the winds pause in their nocturnal psalms.

Thus, even as the stars, shine thou for me,
Benignant shedding their perpetual light,
Though realms divide us, e’en the deepest sea,
Like beacon be to lead my steps aright,
A bright and steadfast star that I shall see
Above my way though it be endless night.
