O why did God that we be cleft ordain,
And desolate to wend our separate way?
Why did He turn to night the gladsome day
When I could not your sweet face see again?
Is God then cruel to inflict us pain,
Who knowing if from me you went away,
All light, all song, all flow’rs would not be gay,
And only thorns and darkness would remain?

Dear God: have mercy on our love divine,
Smell, meaningless to You, to us it is
Like bar of sounding music, taste of wine,
To this our drab existence supreme bliss,
If it be all the same, let love be mine,
Of You I ask no heaven more than this!
